Fans of the intricate mysteries and medicinal expertise of Maomao have a reason to celebrate. Crunchyroll has officially announced that it has acquired the North American and worldwide rights to the upcoming anime film, The Apothecary Diaries: The Late Lady's Treasure (Kusuriya no Hitorigoto: Bо̄hi no Hihо̄). This acquisition covers worldwide distribution, excluding Asia, though it notably includes India.
While the excitement is building, fans will have to wait a little longer for a specific international premiere date. Crunchyroll and Sony Pictures Entertainment have stated that the release date will be announced at a later time. However, the film is already scheduled to make its debut in Japanese theatres on December 11.
A Brand-New Tale of Mystery and Adventure
Unlike some anime films that adapt existing manga or novel chapters, The Late Lady's Treasure will feature a brand-new story written by the original light novel series' author, Hyuganatsu. This ensures that the film provides fresh content for the audience while remaining true to the spirit of the source material.
The plot of the film takes the protagonists, Maomao and Jinshi, away from their usual surroundings. The duo will travel to the hometown of a concubine who passed away five years prior in the imperial harem. Their mission is to return her remains to her homeland, but the journey proves to be far more complex than a simple delivery.
As they navigate this journey, Maomao and Jinshi will encounter a variety of perils and puzzles, including pirates and hidden treasures. The narrative will delve into the secrets surrounding the Empress' remains and introduce a mysterious boy who is said to hold the key to the story. Adding to the production, Mariya Ise joins the voice cast as the character Mu Qing (though the official English romanization has not yet been confirmed).
The Expanding Legacy of The Apothecary Diaries
This film arrives during a period of significant growth for the franchise. The anime adaptation has been steadily building its presence, with the third television anime season having premiered on October 2. This latest season is airing in the "Friday Anime Night" programming block on NTV and 29 affiliated channels. The first cours of the third season is currently underway, with the second cours scheduled to premiere in April 2027.
The series first captured audiences in October 2023, when the first season premiered with its first three episodes and ran for two cours. Crunchyroll has been a key partner in bringing the series to global audiences, streaming the anime as it aired in Japan and providing an English dub. This pattern continued with the second season, which premiered in January 2025 on Nippon TV's FRIDAY ANIME NIGHT block and aired for two consecutive cours. Crunchyroll continues to stream the second season along with its English dubbed version.
From Web Novel to Global Phenomenon
The success of the anime is rooted in a rich history of storytelling. Hyūga first began serializing the story on the "Shōsetsuka ni Narō" (Let's Become Novelists) website back in October 2011. The series eventually moved to print, with Shufunotomo publishing the novels with illustrations by Shino starting in August 2014.
For those who prefer a visual medium, Nekokurage launched a manga adaptation in Square Enix's Monthly Big Gangan magazine in May 2017. This adaptation continues to be ongoing. In English-speaking markets, the franchise is well-supported; Square Enix Manga & Books handles the release of the manga adaptation and the print versions of the novels, while J-Novel Club publishes the novel series digitally.
The core appeal of the series lies in its unique premise. Set in a land ruled by an emperor, the story focuses on the hougong, or rear palace, where consorts and serving women reside. Maomao, a girl with a sharp mind and extensive medicinal knowledge raised by her apothecary father, is kidnapped and sold into service there. Her secret skills are discovered by the perceptive head eunuch, Jinshi, who appoints her as a lady-in-waiting to the Emperor's favorite consort—specifically so she can use her knowledge to taste the lady's food for poison.
With the addition of The Late Lady's Treasure to the franchise, the world of The Apothecary Diaries continues to expand across multiple formats, promising more mysteries and medicinal intrigue for fans worldwide.
